How to use it
Three or four drops
Clean skin, morning and evening. No starting slowly and no alternate days needed.
Press, then moisturise
Palms flat rather than fingers dragging. Give it a moment, then your cream over the top.
SPF if it's the morning
Antioxidants and sunscreen aren't alternatives to each other. They work on different things.
Stable, or high strength
The two routes a vitamin C serum can take, and what each one asks of you in return.
| Feature | AVNOIA | L-ascorbic acid serum | Typical drugstore vitamin C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form of vitamin C | Ascorbyl glucoside 2%, plus ascorbyl palmitate | L-ascorbic acid, often 10–20% | Varies, often unstated |
| Goes brown before you finish it | No | Commonly | Varies |
| Stings on application | No | Often | Varies |
| Antioxidant partners | 1% ferulic acid and vitamin E | Sometimes | Rarely |
| When to use it | Morning and evening | Usually morning only | Varies |
| Organic oils in the formula | Six | Rarely any | Varies |
| Natural-origin ingredients | 99% | Varies | Varies |
| Independent certification | Ecocert COSMOS Natural | Varies | Varies |
Comparison columns describe the category in general, not any specific brand.
What's inside and why it's there
99% of natural origin and 13% organic, certified COSMOS Natural by Ecocert, dermatologically tested. Gluten free and vegan, no GMO ingredients, recyclable packaging. Contains organic sweet almond oil, so it is not nut free.
Ascorbyl Glucoside
A stable form of vitamin C at a stated 2%, with oil-soluble ascorbyl palmitate further down for good measure. Stable is the operative word — this is the reason the serum looks the same on the last day as the first.
Ferulic Acid
Vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid are the antioxidant combination that gets studied together rather than separately. Having all three in one formula is less common than the number of serums claiming vitamin C would suggest.
Jojoba, Sea Buckthorn + Rosehip
Six organic oils in total, including avocado, castor and almond. Sea buckthorn in particular is an antioxidant oil in its own right, and it's stated at 1%.
Questions people ask before buying
No. There's organic sweet almond oil in the formula, and this is one of the few products in our range that isn't labelled nut free. Don't assume the rest of our range and this one match on that — read the list and check with your doctor if you have a tree nut allergy.
Ascorbyl glucoside at 2%, with ascorbyl palmitate as a second, oil-soluble form. Both are stabilised derivatives rather than pure L-ascorbic acid, which makes them gentler on skin and far less prone to falling apart in the bottle.
They're different chemistry, so the numbers don't compare directly — a derivative at 2% isn't a weaker version of L-ascorbic acid at 15%, it's a different ingredient that behaves differently on skin. What you gain is no sting, no oxidising and something you can use twice a day. What you give up is the speed a high-strength serum can offer if your skin tolerates it.
It shouldn't. That orange-brown colour in an old vitamin C serum is L-ascorbic acid oxidising, and there isn't any in here. A stable derivative is the whole reason for going this route.
Either, and plenty of people use it twice a day. In the morning, follow with sunscreen — antioxidants deal with free radicals, SPF deals with UV, and you want both. At night it sits comfortably in a repair routine.
Working with the vitamin C rather than beside it. Ferulic acid and vitamin E are the two ingredients most associated with getting more out of a vitamin C formula, and both are in this one — ferulic at a stated 1%.
It shouldn't. The tingle people associate with vitamin C comes from the low pH a high-strength L-ascorbic serum needs to work. A derivative doesn't need that, so there's nothing here to sting with — one reason it's dermatologically tested and suits all skin types.
Yes. The clashes people worry about come from combining a low-pH vitamin C with other actives, and that isn't the situation here. If your skin is easily upset, keep this for mornings and anything stronger for nights.
Sweet mandarin with soft floral and citrus notes behind it. The label declares limonene, citral, linalool and citronellol, all from natural essential oils.
Finish the routine
Serum, then a moisturiser. Sunscreen last if it's the morning.
