Soak your hair through before anything else — a shampoo on half-damp hair won't foam, and you end up reaching for a second pump you never needed. Massage it over the scalp and leave the lengths alone; they get cleaned by what runs down over them.
Rinse until the water runs clear, cool at the end if you want more shine. Conditioner afterwards stays below the ears — anywhere near the roots and you lose the lift you just washed in.
